How to show
hidden files and file name extensions
In order to protect system files from accidentally being deleted by the user, Windows hides certain files from being seen with Windows Explorer or My Computer. However many viruses and spyware also hide themselves in this way to prevent them from being detected and deleted.
To view all hidden files and file name extensions, you need to change your system settings by following the steps below.
For Windows 95/98,
- Open My Computer or Windows Explorer.
- On the View menu, click Options.
- Select the View tab.
- Scroll down until and select the Show all files radio button.
- Click the Ok button.
For Windows 2000\NT\XP\Me
- Open My Computer or Windows Explorer.
- On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
- Select the View tab.
- To view all hidden file types, select the Show hidden files and folders option.
- To see all file name extensions, deselect the Hide file extensions for known file types check box.
- Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
